New for the 2019/20 season!
Welcome to the SUMHC Development Squad page. My name is Connor Johnson and I am a fourth year biochemistry student and the captain of the development squad, also called the 5th XI, for the 2019/20 season.
The development squad competes on Saturdays in the Hampshire League Division 7. Last year we competed in Division 6 where we narrowly avoided relegation however due to circumstances it was decided to drop down to a league which better fits the skill level of our players.
As the lowest team in SUMHC many of our players are completely new to hockey and so everyone who wants to play is given the opportunity. I personally had very limited experience playing hockey before university but the weekly training sessions working on skills and tactics provide opportunities for everyone to move up in the club.
My aim this year is to integrate both new and experienced players and build a team with the potential to be a competitive contender within the league. We are a very social team with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic socials. On Wednesdays, we join the whole club and partake in circles with the whole club while on Saturdays we have team socials sometimes mixing with other teams from SUMHC and the ladies club.
Highlights in the social calendar include the fresher house crawl (where we get to know the newest members of the team), the Christmas ball and the annual team meal. If you have any other questions or queries about why joining SUMHC will be a decision you will not regret, do not hesitate to contact me or any other member of the club. I look forward to meeting you next year. Connor Johnson
